Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Registration
Enter registration details, specify a username and password and login to the secure area.

2. Selection of Fast Stream schemes
Once you have selected the Fast Stream scheme or schemes you wish to apply for, you will have a specific number of days (shown in brackets below) to complete stages 3, 4, 5 and 6. The time frame for each stage begins once you have completed the preceding stage; unused time is not carried forward. You will be notified of the required completion dates in your Scheme Progress page(s), which can be accessed via the My Applications link and scheme name table in your secure website.

If you genuinely need an extension for any stage, please contact the Fast Stream Helpdesk on 01276 400 333 or send a message via the candidate website.

Note that the Analytical Fast Stream incorporates some additional specialist assessment (see 8), but does not include stages 3 or 7.

3. Online self-assessment tests (7 days)
These verbal and numerical reasoning tests are purely for your own benefit. They are designed to help you assess your performance and rate your chances of success.

4. Online practice tests (7 days)
These tests, though optional, are highly recommended. They are an opportunity to try the kind of tests you’ll have to pass in the next stage of the application process.

5. Online selection tests (7 days)

  • Verbal reasoning
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Competency questionnaire (not applicable to the Analytical Fast Stream options)

It is the results of these tests – and these tests alone – that determine whether you progress to the next stage. Click here for further guidance on taking the tests.

6. Options selection (7 days) and online application form (7 days)
Your invitation to stages 7 onwards will depend each time on your passing the previous stage.

7. Supervised e-Tray exercise

  • Numerical and verbal reasoning re-test
  • e-Tray exercise

This will take place at a regional centre over the course of half a day. You can find an example e-Tray exercise here.

8. Analytical specialist assessment
If you are successful in the Sift, you will attend a half day specialist assessment event for Economist, Operational Researcher, Social Researcher and Statistician applicants only.

9. One-day Fast Stream Assessment Centre (FSAC)
The assessment centre will be in London. You can download an online copy of the assessment centre guide here. (pdf)

 10. Final Selection Board
This is an additional stage that you will have to pass if you are applying for the Diplomatic Service, Houses of Parliament or TiB Fast Stream.
